The mistakes I made as a Beginner Lash Tech
Starting out as a lash technician was an exciting yet nerve-wracking journey. As with any new venture, I made my fair share of mistakes. Reflecting on these missteps has been crucial for my growth, and I hope sharing them will help other aspiring lash techs avoid the same pitfalls.
#1 Comparing myself to other lash artists
the insecurities I created for myself were wild!
I compared my beginner works with the top lash artists in the world! Not taking into account their years and years of experience and education. Not taking into account that everyone’s journey is different.
LESSON: Comparison is the thief of joy! Be kind to yourself!
#2 Trying to get fast at lashing
Instead of focusing on the technique.
I used to be so focused on the time of lashing. Thinking a good lash artist works fast. Stickies, bad styling & incorrect technique was the result and I quickly learnt that this ain’t the way!
LESSON: Focus on the technique and muscle memory & the speed will come!
#3 Not prepping the lashes
to be honest - it just wasn’t a thing
When I started lashing there was no lash shampoos and we used tape instead of gel pads. Times have changed. But I do I wish I would’ve been more open to new things in the industry (like a lash shampoo) & learnt more about lash prepping!
LESSON: Keep learning after your training. There is always so much more to learn!
#4 Having policies & sticking to them
honestly!
I had ZERO business knowledge + I was such a people pleaser = not a good combination!
I had to learn the hard way about having policies and how to protect your business and your mental health.
LESSON: Always have boundaries in place!
#5 Not generating & posting content
I used the same 3 photos on rotation to advertise my services.
And those 3 photos were BAD!
I was too shy to take photos of my clients and even if I did - I was too much of a perfectionist and thought my work is not good enough to post.
LESSON: Keep showcasing your work - someone is always watching!
